I was way too nervous about this night. Felt like the weight of the world was stacked on my shoulders. Ninety whole days of hands-on rebuilding. Now here I was, sitting on stage, prepared to take the next step into life and freedom.

I stared out into the crowd, not knowing what I was looking for as I tipped a chin at my overly excited brother and his equally excited girlfriend. Plus was there too, somewhere hidden backstage. The staff said he never missed a crossing since the place opened two years prior and for obvious reasons, that added even more pressure.

Imagine having the trajectory of your life sponsored by a millionaire. Now imagine having said millionaire sitting right behind you watching you step into the gift that he unselfishly gave to you. Now imagine the possibility of fucking all that up, basically shitting in the man’s face because you simply dropped the ball.

See what I mean?

Too much pressure.

I’d be right for getting up and running out the damn door.

But I couldn’t.

Not at this moment.

Because the most beautiful woman in the world had just walked in wearing a royal blue dress that fell over her curves, waving with the wind of her steps as she made her way to a seat near the front.

She waved at me, and that subtle gesture that no one else probably noticed, set my heart into palpitations.

And I smiled.

I smiled so damn big I had to physically run a palm down my face to stop it. She giggled, as she crossed her leg, probably thinking I was just playing around. But the truth was that the minute she walked in, I remembered who I was looking for.

“And up next, we have Nelson Sonnier.” The mistress of ceremonies called my name, pulling me out of my head and this goofy ass stare that Alesha had pulled me into. “Nelson’s been nominated the leader of this semester’s line. And would like to offer up a few words of encouragement. Nelson, come on up sir.” The beaming brown skinned lady, Mrs. Pucky, who’d been our designated house mother for the duration of our stay, waved out a skinny arm and stepped aside to open my space at the podium.

“Good evening, everybody. And thank you, Mrs. Pucky.” I cleared my throat, calmly finding the piece of paper in my pocket that held the words I’d prepared just thirty minutes prior. “First off, I wanna thank y’all for coming out tonight. Especially my brother over there, his girlfriend Kimi, and a really good friend of mine, Ms. Alesha West. This means a lot.” I nodded at my three guests, offering a wink to Alesha because I couldn’t help myself.

“Now for the heavy stuff.” I took a deep breath and smiled, encouraged by scattered laughter from the crowd of about fifty people. “TAF has truly been a gift. I’m not sure I knew any of this was necessary until I stepped back out into the world. Like something as simple as shopping for your own groceries.
